Why Repeating Pleasure Never Ends Desire
Concept 1
Doing something repeatedly does not stop the mind from craving it again. The number of times we indulge in a “pleasure” does not automatically turn it into suffering, nor does it erase the underlying desire. In Buddhism, the experience of pleasure or happiness is linked to the fruition of past wholesome actions (kamma), while unpleasant or sorrowful experiences arise from the fruition of past unwholesome actions.
This means that pleasure is not permanent, and repeating the same action will not create lasting satisfaction. The mind continues to seek, cling, and crave, leading to cycles of attachment and suffering.
Examples include:
- Drinking intoxicating beverages repeatedly, expecting the pleasure to satisfy you forever.
- Eating rich or indulgent foods over and over, hoping they will provide lasting happiness.
The key insight is that true contentment comes from understanding the causes of craving and breaking the cycle, not from repeated indulgence. Awareness and mindfulness, rather than repetition, lead the mind toward freedom and peace.
